On Saturday, December 27th at the Rio Hondo Event Center in Downey, the Polish University Club of Los Angeles held its annual Opłatek Luncheon and Scholarship Presentation. Scholarships were presented to ten undergraduate and graduate students of Polish descent.
The sharing of Opłatek set the afternoon’s festive tone as attendees exchanged holiday wishes with friends old and new. George Kalinski spoke about the unique significance of Wigilia to Poles. A delicious, buffet-style lunch followed.
The organization also held its biennial election for Board of Directors and Committee Chairpersons. Members elected the following officers: Ewa O’Neal, President; Regina Sikora, Vice President; Theresa Dudzick, Secretary; Paul Kaymark, Treasurer; and Ed O’Neal, Membership Chairperson.
The luncheon concluded with a raffle and, of course, the presentation of scholarship awards by Vice President Regina Sikora and Treasurer Paul Kaymark. The 2014-2015 scholarship recipients are: Ania Bilski – Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine (Joseph Bieniasz Memorial Scholarship); Joanna Hrabia – UCLA (Bronia Walacha Memorial Scholarship); Aneta Jelowicki – Cal State Fullerton (Thomas Bruzdowicz Scholarship); Maciej Rosa – Cal Poly Pomona (Past Presidents’ Scholarship); Natalie Kozlowski – USC; Martin Myszynski –Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; Pamela Pyrzynski – Wrocław Medical University; Natalia Romuzga – Claremont Graduate University; and Amy Sobejko – Mount St. Mary’s College.
Marysia Kozlowska of Cal State Northridge received a scholarship sponsored by POLAM Federal Credit Union, presented by Danusia Dobrowolska from the POLAM office in Orange County.
